Posh Dresses, Hot Men and Heaving Bosoms

I'm all about the Historical Fiction with a dash of romance. Bookworm, aspiring writer and closet romantic (ssh, don't tell anyone!) In mid-thirties, and work for a large entertainment chain in the UK. Worryingly, I am considering purchasing a third Kindle to feed my book habit. 'Tis very possible that I read far too much!

Dark Admirer

Dark Admirer - Charlotte Featherstone To be honest, I wasn't sure if I liked it because not a great deal actually happened? It felt like the beginning of a story rather than a finished novella and so it was a bit frustrating.

The Queen, Her Lover and the Most Notorious Spy in History: The intriguing true story of Queen Victoria's secret

The Queen, Her Lover and the Most Notorious Spy in History: The intriguing true story of Queen Victoria's secret - Roland Perry I can't help thinking that the book actually got a lot more interesting once the later spy arc started. That's what sparked my interest. I wish more of the book has been about that rather than going on about Victoria's rumoured love affairs. I also found interesting that she was involved with Karim as that has been relatively hushed up in comparison to her relationship with John Brown.

Demonglass

Demonglass - Rachel Hawkins I think I really just wasn't the target audience for this book. It was engaging enough and it passed the time but I didn't really like the characters all that much, I was exasperated by the love triangle and Sophie was a bit of a special snowflake for my taste.

My Man Jeeves

My Man Jeeves - P.G. Wodehouse I was really hoping that I would enjoy reading this compilation of Jeeves stories, unfortunately I didn't realise that half of the stories didn't feature them :(

The Spanish Captain

The Spanish Captain - Robyn Elliot rounding up to a 2.5/3 stars.

The Pretty Gentleman

The Pretty Gentleman - Max Fincher I feel like I have to give two marks: one for the story and one for the presentation.

The actual story was quite gripping and it had a good Georgian feel, I enjoyed it as far as it went even though the lead character George was that rather ultra naive type you find in novels of the period. As a reader I spent a lot of time waiting for the shoe to drop and despite the almost overwhelming odds against George, I think it ended satisfactorily. From a purely story viewpoint I would read more from this author.

Unfortunately the presentation left a great deal to be desired. The formatting was beyond strange. Many of the pages had one line per page which was frustrating when you just wanted the read! there was HUGE gaps in between paragraphs as well which were unnecessary and distracting. Frankly it was hard work reading this, which is a shame as once I stuck with the book, I actually enjoyed the characters and story-line. Had I not persevered, I would have given up on what turned out to be a good story.

The cover was also not very interesting and the title and author didn't stand out on it which wasn't very helpful. I seriously think a new cover design would work wonders!

So the plot and character would have got a 3.5 or even a 4 but the formatting and presentation knocked it right down to a 1 maybe a 2 (if I were being generous!)
SPOILER ALERT!

The Whispered Kiss

The Whispered Kiss - Marcia Lynn McClure Rounded up from 1.5 stars

I love a good fairy-tale retelling and I have always loved Beauty and the Beast however I wasn't so impressed by this mostly because of random spelling mistake which took me out of the story, names which were really jarring and the fact that the hero didn't really seem to actually like the heroine for a good chunk of the book. Plus the fact that there was a section of the book where Coquette was being drugged to make her think that he had taken her while she was unconscious. Umm, obviously consent seems not to be a thing here.

MYSELF MY ENEMY (The Queens of England, Vol. 1)

MYSELF MY ENEMY (The Queens of England, Vol. 1) - Jean Plaidy I had to knock off a star off my rating because the lead character was one of the most irritating heroines I have come across in a long time. She was so inconsiderate of anyone else, so rude and trouble-making that frankly it was a chore reading this book which was a great shame as I love this time period and am very interested in it.

One of the few things that actually was positive was her relationship with Charles who while he seemed weak and way too eager to please her was quite sweet. In her own way she was devoted to him and her family.

Hey!

I have literally just stared this up and have little idea what I am doing. After several years on GR I have decided to start for pastures new but the thought of starting from the beginning is rather daunting.

Rose Daughter

Rose Daughter - Robin McKinley Frankly, I didn't like it as much as 'Beauty'. Still a solid 3 star book though

The Pirate and the Pagan

The Pirate and the Pagan - Virginia Henley I really appreciated the Restoration England setting in an age of wall to wall boring regency romance. There so needs to be more restoration romance, I would be totally here for that. Charles II was a character in this and I actually enjoyed him slightly more than the main couple who's big misunderstandings drove me nuts after a while. On the whole I enjoyed it.

666 Park Avenue

666 Park Avenue: The Official TV Tie-in Edition - Gabriella Pierce I altered the rating I was going to give this book upon reflection because the twist at the end really irritated me.

In fairness I did read the book to the end. I just didn't enjoy the characters or care about them. The thing that really gets to me was that the concept was a good one but I suppose I just didn't like how it was executed.

The Strangled Queen (The Accursed Kings, #2)

The Strangled Queen (The Accursed Kings, #2) - Maurice Druon On the whole I enjoyed it. The book had enough intrigue to keep me interested. Now I just have to wait for the next in the series and perhaps to do some reading around the time period as I think it would have helped.

Roselynde (Signature Select)

Roselynde - Roberta Gellis Tbh I enjoyed the historical detail and thought it read as more of a historical fiction than a romance novel but I didn't really like Simon or Alinor that much. I found Alinor very irritating at times they were constantly arguing about atupid things and then making up, there was a big age gap between the two which personally didn't work for me (but that's a personal quirk)In the end I just didn't really believe that they actually liked each other that much.

I think you'd enjoy this if you like fiction set in the Middle Ages such as Elizabeth Chadwick or Maurice Druon. Even fans of Game of Thrones would probably get something out of it.

I wish I could give it more than two stars and it probably deserves three but I just found Simon and Alinor so annoying I couldn't in all honesty.

The Sword in the Stone (Collins Modern Classics)

The Sword in the Stone - T.H. White I'm currently re reading this and I love it. Apparently it's part of a series which I have to track down.

Cry to Heaven

Cry to Heaven - Anne Rice One of my favourite books of all time. I love the prose and the castrati interest me so much . As a singer and a musician the book appealed to me so much.
